Grandma Approved Clay Mask Reloaded & simple recipes to use clay in your daily life.

Here's What No One Tells You About Clay Mask  (Multani mitti, Rhassoul clay, Bentonite clay)

For spotless skin, in my native country, India we’ve been advised million times to use clay mask & today after a lot of research I’m gonna share my clay version 2.0 – new & improved along with its functional properties (don’t wanna sound nerdy though) & how to use them for maximum benefit.

Multani mitti/ Fuller’s Earth:

Fuller’s earth is the most popular in India for use as a base for all facial mask needs & is although its suitable for all skin types; oily skinned people prefer it over all. According to Wikipedia, fuller’s earth consists of similar components like montmorillonite as other popular clays (rhassoul & bentonite) so the properties are thought to be similar with varying effectiveness. It has a pH of around neutral to alkaline; about 7.5 (makes it great as a base for all kinds of masks).

Multani mitti is said to lighten skin tone & thus can be used to treat hyperpigmentation (scars & dark spots) & it behaves as a detergent in aqueous soln. (when mixed with water) & thus takes out all those pollution particles & dirt & most importantly oil from your skin, which makes it great to use for oily skin.
Here, I’ll mention two recipes which use multani mitti as a base for spotless skin. The ingredients are highly customizable & you can change them as you please.

mud pack

Recipe 1 : Multani mitti for deep cleansing

We’ll need,

Multani mitti powder

Bengal Gram Flour / Besan

Rose water (2 tbsp)

Rice Flour

Milk

Essential oil of your choice (I would prefer cedarwood oil in this case because it has excellent properties of being antiseptic, antibacterial & antiviral.)

Instructions: Add multani mitti & rice flour together in 2:1 ratio & add besan. Do not add a lot of besan or it’ll simply dry out your skin. Add rose water & milk (little if you have oily skin & more if your skin is on the dry side) & you’re good to go.

Recipe 2: Multani mitti for hyperpigmentation/ scar treatment.

Attention !!!!  Multani mitti pack on its own will not help much in fading your scars or remove tan but will be great in conjunction with other therapies as prescribed by your physician (using AHAs, BHAs or over the counter scar removal creams  *** we’ll discuss about it later).

Here we need,

Multani mitti powder

Vinegar (2 tsp) for oily skin or / Lemon juice 2 tsp for normal skin or / Cucumber juice 2 tsp for dry skin

Yogurt

Sandalwood powder &/or licorice/mulethi powder (leave them if you currently don’t have them; can be used any one or both at a time)

Honey

Sandalwood essential oil (2 drops)

Frankincense essential oil (2 Drops)

Moroccan argan oil (2 Drops)

Procedure: You can mix the above along with a little water to make a thick paste & add the essential oils. However, essential oils are optional as they’d be synergistic in action with the other important ingredients here but without it, you’re perfectly well. This is a very potent face mask & you’ll probably see the difference right from the first application.

Rhassoul Clay :

Moroccan Lava clay or Rhassoul clay is a great addition in your beauty bucket. Contrary to the situation that clays are mostly popular with people with oily skin, rhassoul clay is equally suitable for normal to dry skin as it not only draws out impurities but also moisturizes the skin. Rhassoul clay also helps balancing the sebum production so it makes it an excellent component in oily skin care.
I’ve seen on popular sites people adding acidic ingredients (vinegar, lemon juice etc) in rhassoul clay along with water to make face mask which I highly suggest not to. Rhassoul clay works because its inherently alkaline & the high conc. of negatively charged ions in solution would help it draw out most of the impurities (mainly positively charged). Adding acidic substances in rhassoul clay would kill that very property you’re using it for.

At a low pH (acidic pH, anything <7) , the removal of metal ions (pollutants as heavy metal micro particles)  is decreased due to the higher concentration of available H + ions present in the mixture which compete with the positively charged metal ions.

So if you must use anything along with water in this pack, use something alkaline like cucumber juice, coconut water or neutral like rose water; essential oils etc.

Bentonite Clay:

Bentonite clay or Indian healing clay is famous for its anti pollution action just like the one mentioned above but in a more aggressive way, so bentonite clay is only recommended to be used twice a week & may not be suitable for extremely sensitive skin. It is usually found in two forms: Sodium & Calcium Benotinite; however, any of them can be used. Sodium bentonite is a bit cheaper.
Same rule of alkalinity will be applicable here so you should not mix acidic substances in the mask.
